Diagram 2: System Pressures: Installation or Removal
Before installing or removing the thermostatic expansion valve, fully release refrigerant to reduce the system pressure to zero. The schematic shows the refrigeration circuit, with pressure gauges marked =0. The crossed-out symbols prohibit working on the valve under positive system pressure.
Diagram 3: Warning
WARNING: Do Not Place Open Flame On or Near Bulb! Never apply an open flame onto or close to the valve’s sensing bulb. Heat from flame may damage the bulb, rupture the internal charge, and cause valve failure.
Diagram 4: Valve Orientation
This section covers proper valve mounting orientation. The illustration shows acceptable installation positions of the expansion valve, while one orientation is crossed out as not permitted. The valve cannot be installed in that forbidden position.

Diagram 5: Bulb & External Equalizer Locations
This diagram shows the correct and incorrect mounting positions for the thermostatic expansion valve’s sensing bulb and external equalizer line on the suction piping. Marked NO = Not permitted installation points; marked OK = approved installation point. The sensing bulb and external equalizer must be fitted at the designated approved suction line location to ensure accurate temperature sensing and proper valve operation.
Diagram 6: Bulb Location
This clock diagram illustrates valid mounting positions for the sensing bulb around the suction pipe:
- OK positions: 3 o’clock, 4–5 o’clock, 7–8 o’clock, 9 o’clock (sides / upper side of horizontal pipe)
- Forbidden positions (X): 12 o’clock (top dead center) and 6 o’clock (bottom dead center). Mounting at the very top risks false temperature reading from superheated gas; mounting at the very bottom risks liquid pooling under the bulb and measurement error.
Diagram 7: Solder Techniques
Shows soldering precautions for the expansion valve.
- ❌ Prohibited: Direct flame onto the valve body. Heat will damage the internal powerhead / sensing element.
- ✅ Approved soldering method: Apply wet heat-sink protection (wet cloth wrapped around valve body) while brazing pipe connections. The wet cloth absorbs excess heat and protects the valve internals from thermal damage.

Diagram 8: Determining Superheat
This schematic shows the refrigeration circuit for measuring superheat of an R‑22 system.
- Measure the actual suction line temperature
T = 52°F (11°C)at the sensing bulb location. - Measure suction pressure
P = 68 psig (4.7 bar g), which corresponds to saturation temperatureTp = 40°F (4°C). - Calculate superheat:
T − Tp = Tsh52°F (11°C) − 40°F (4°C) = 12°F (7°C)
Superheat is the difference between the measured suction gas temperature and the saturation temperature derived from suction pressure.
Diagram 9: Adjust Superheat
This diagram illustrates the superheat adjustment procedure on the thermostatic expansion valve.
- Rotate the adjustment stem clockwise: decreases superheat (thermometer arrow points down).
- Rotate the adjustment stem counterclockwise: increases superheat (thermometer arrow points up). Turn the internal adjusting nut to fine-tune the target superheat value for the refrigeration system.

Diagram 10: TXV Superheat Adjustment
This table shows superheat adjustment parameters for the B family thermostatic expansion valve.
- Total available adjustment turns: 10 turns
- Approximate superheat change per full turn for different refrigerants: 表格Refrigerant+20°F / -7°C Range-20°F / -29°C RangeR-222.2 °F per turn4.2 °F per turnR-134a3.8 °F per turn1.8 °F per turnR-404A / R507A2.2 °F per turnN/A for R-410A
Instructions: Turn the adjustment stem clockwise to increase superheat, and counterclockwise to decrease superheat. To restore near factory default setting: rotate the stem counterclockwise fully until the spring unloads (stop/ratchet point). Then rotate back by one half of the listed “Total Turns”.

Diagram 11: Maximum Dehydration Temperatures
Warning graphic: Sensing bulb temperature must NOT exceed 150°F (65°C).
Caption: Maximum Dehydration Temperatures
Footnote note: The valve body can reach up to 250°F (121°C), provided the sensing bulb stays below its maximum dehydration temperature limit.

Remote Bulb Straps — Installation Instructions
This document provides installation guidance for Emerson remote sensing bulb straps, used to fasten TXV sensing bulbs onto suction piping.
- Take hardware out from the strap assembly or packaging bag.
- Two styles of bulb straps are available:
- Figure 1: Single-row strap
- Figure 2: Three-row strap with shaped radius for seating the sensing bulb
- Clean the suction line surface at the mounting location. Secure the remote bulb to the suction line close to the evaporator coil outlet.
- For suction lines smaller than 7/8 inch: Mount the bulb on the top of the pipe (refer to Figure 3).
- For suction lines of 7/8 inch and larger: Mount the bulb on the lower half of the pipe, at either the 4 o’clock or 8 o’clock position (refer to Figure 4, 45° below horizontal).
- Installation verification checklist: a. The entire length of the sensing bulb maintains solid contact with the suction line. b. Equal bulb lengths extend out from both sides of the strap. c. The bulb is tightly fastened to the suction line. d. Warning: Never apply flame onto or near the sensing bulb.
