External balance screw type thermodynamic expansion valve is shown in Figure 4-26. It is basically similar to the internal balance expansion valve. There are four main differences:

(1) The pressure generated under the diaphragm is different.

The diaphragm is not in contact with the supplied liquid, but has a cavity connected to the evaporator outlet by a balance tube to directly introduce the superheated vapor pressure at the outlet end of the evaporator into the lower portion of the expansion valve diaphragm.

(2) The form of the adjustment lever is different. The installation of the externally balanced thermal expansion valve is shown in Figure 4-27. It is connected to the evaporator through a liquid separator. The temperature sensing package is placed on the outlet pipe of the evaporator to sense the superheat of the evaporator.

(3) the flow of the external balanced thermal expansion valve is large, so the valve core adopts the conical structure instead of the valve needle.

(4) the temperature sensing bag of the external balance thermal expansion valve is filled with adsorbent (activated carbon or silica gel) and filled with carbon dioxide gas. It is used to absorb carbon dioxide gas, improve the working performance of expansion valve, so that the pressure in the bellows only changes with the temperature in the temperature sensing bag, but has nothing to do with the ambient temperature of bellows and capillary. The external flat type thermal expansion valve improves the working conditions of the evaporator. But its structure is more complex, manufacturing and installation are more difficult, so it is only used when the pressure loss of the evaporator is large.

General Knowledge on “Internal balance screw type thermodynamic expansion valve ”

The internal balance type thermal expansion valve is mainly composed of a valve body, a valve seat, a bonnet, a valve needle, an adjusting socket, an adjusting rod, a packing, a temperature sensing bag, a capillary tube and an elastic metal diaphragm,. The internal balanced expansion valve is installed on the inlet pipe of the evaporator, and the temperature sensing package is placed on the outlet pipe of the evaporator.

The temperature sensor is filled with refrigerant (generally the same as the working medium used in the system). When the temperature it feels changes, the pressure in the temperature sensing bag changes accordingly. Its pressure acts on the elastic metal diaphragm. The upper part of the metal diaphragm is affected by the working medium pressure in the temperature sensing bag, and the lower part is affected by the refrigerant pressure and spring. The opening of the valve hole is controlled to adjust the liquid supply of the evaporator.

When the amount of liquid entering the evaporator is less than the demand of the load of the evaporator, the superheat at the outlet of the evaporator increases, the pressure above the diaphragm is greater than the pressure below, so that the diaphragm moves down, push the regulating rod to compress the spring, open the needle valve, make the valve hole open, then the liquid supply increases.

When the superheat degree of the steam at the outlet of the evaporator decreases, the pressure on the diaphragm is less than the pressure below, and the diaphragm moves up, so that the valve hole is closed and the liquid supply quantity decreases. As the opening of the thermal expansion valve is based on the force balance, when the superheat is reduced to a certain value, the valve will close and stop the liquid supply. Therefore, in the operation process of refrigeration system, the thermal expansion valve can automatically adjust the liquid supply according to the change of heat load of evaporator, so that the system can run smoothly.
